An HMO generally covers in-network providers, and it covers emergency care even when the provider is out of network. A PPO also covers out-of-network providers, usually at a higher cost.
How do I choose the right health insurance plan?
Compare premiums, deductibles, copays, and out-of-pocket limits. The right plan also depends on your doctors, prescriptions, and expected healthcare needs.
Can I get health insurance with a pre-existing condition?
Yes. ACA Marketplace plans cannot deny coverage or charge more because of pre-existing conditions. Other types of coverage may have different rules.
What's typically not covered by health insurance?
Cosmetic procedures, most experimental treatments, and some alternative therapies are commonly excluded. Always review your plan's summary of benefits.
When can I enroll in a health plan?
Most people enroll during Open Enrollment. A qualifying life event, such as losing other coverage, getting married, or having a baby, can open a limited special enrollment period.
What's the difference between a deductible and an out-of-pocket maximum?
A deductible is what you pay for covered services before the plan starts to pay. The out-of-pocket maximum is the most you pay for covered services in a plan year. Premiums do not count toward either amount.
